Sunday Turkey Blogging

This delicious photo was taken Friday at the annual media party thrown by the Del Mar Fair San Diego County Fair. (The name was changed a few years ago, but I still think of it as the Del Mar Fair, a much better, more specific name).
Agriculture was the original reason to have these fairs, so in an urbanized area like San Diego County they give the remaining farmers some publicity. San Diego's most valuable crops are avocados and ornamentals, but we still raise livestock, including, yes, turkeys.
This band of five turkeys strolled around the fair, cleverly guided by the grain in the back of a toy radio-controlled truck. Every so often the truck would stop and we city slickers would gather to gawk at the gobblers. We soon learned to "talk turkey" by imitating their rapid gobbling sounds, which would cause them to reply.
The Del Mar Fair, like many other county fairs, books oldie but good acts. One year I saw Tommy Tutone, known for his one hit, Jenny (867-5309). I saw him playing and after the set bought him a beer. The fair also books contemporary acts, such as Pink.
Friday night apres turkeys we saw the Surfaris (known for the surf classic "Wipeout").
Several of us got out to the dance floor . I got out and danced more energetically than I would have thought possible, given that Friday was a very busy day for me, and I was stuffed with food and booze. I felt no aftereffects Saturday aside from some tiredness and lassitude which resulted in me doing very little.
