Green Village, Alameda County Fair

I would like to applaud the Alameda County Fair for the following that was sent to me today. It shows innovation and progress and concern on their part to our environment and the fairgrounds future as a whole. One of the problems with some of our county fairs these days is their lack of ability to change and grow with the times. That is certainly not true of this fair. I for one say congratulations, and RAH to them - lets see some more of this from some of our other fairs.

Highlighting this year’s Fair will be a Living Green Program featuring a Living Green Village for the opening weekend (June 20-22). The general program will focus on our planet and how we can reduce waste, pollution and restore elements to enrich our lives as well as the environment. The program will include informational displays, exhibits and live programming. The Living Green Village will encompass a large area of the Fairgrounds and will consist of "Green" vendors, educational exhibits focusing on composting, recycling and green energy projects worldwide, and children's activities among others.

The Alameda County Fair is dedicated to the philosophy of recycling materials for the mutual goal of conservation and cost reduction while continuing to maintain the beauty of our landscaped grounds. Included in our year round Conservation and Recycling Program are:

  • Reforestation
  • Composting
  • Cardboard recycling
  • Paper recycling
  • Water recycling
  • Scrap metal recycling
  • Glass and plastic bottle recycling
  • Straw and manure recycling
  • Asphalt recycling
  • Solar Energy

Additionally, the Fair Association is extremely proud to be the largest non-profit generator of solar energy in the United States generating roughly one megawatt of electricity – enough to power nearly 1,000 homes.

Summer on Sunset

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) January 23, 2008 -- Los Angeles native Sam Mosley today announced the launch of SummerOnSunset.com, a revolutionary new social networking experiment melding online and offline exposure to provide much more than merely 15-minutes of fame. $25 lets you put your picture on a Sunset Blvd. billboard and the homepage of SummerOnSunset.com.

Squares will be on sale through May 31st, or until sold out (whichever comes first) and the billboard will be unveiled on June 30th and be displayed through Labor Day 2008. Multiple squares can be purchased simultaneously for greater prominence.

SummerOnSunset.com has contracted with Clear Channel Outdoor for the lease of the premier 24'x26' illuminated square billboard on the corner of Sunset Blvd. and Bronson Ave. in Los Angeles, the celebrity capital of the world. The location across the street from historic Warner Sunset Studios (now home to KTLA-CW and Tribune Studios) was chosen for its exceptional visibility in front of millions of decision-makers, A-Listers and VIPs.

When asked what prompted the project, founder Sam Mosley explained: "People want to be seen, but even using websites like MySpace, with more than 200 million users, it's challenging to get noticed." She adds, "To get the attention they're looking for, people need something truly extraordinary. SummerOnSunset.com is the way to set yourself apart this summer. This is for the 'cool kids'."

The project offers 9,984 spots on prime Hollywood-area real estate, permanent website placement and all of the media buzz that accompanies it -- for less than the price of a night out on the town.

To participate in the project dubbed 2008's most notable online phenomenon, read FAQs or regular blog postings, visit www.SummerOnSunset.com.

State Fair 2008 Dates Announced

Compiled By Staff

In 2008 Californians will have two more days to have Big Fun at the California State Fair. At its December board meeting, the California Exposition & State Fair board of directors voted to expand the State Fair operating schedule from 16 days to 18 days. The 2008 State Fair dates will be August 15 – September 1 with Mondays open.

Primarily, the new schedule supports the needs of the State Fair to contract with a midway operator, vendors and concessionaires who travel throughout the Fair circuit, while also allowing the Fair to maximize attendance.

"The Fair industry is very closely connected in a circuit of dates and each Fair's schedule determines how vendors and concessionaires move from one Fair to the next," says Norb Bartosik, State Fair CEO and General Manager. "We cannot extend the duration of the State Fair, but we can increase the number of days we're open and still allow our business partners to make the circuit jump from Southern California to Cal Expo and on to their next destination after Labor Day," says Bartosik.

The Cal Expo Board of Directors unanimously agreed that the additional days open would provide a greater opportunity for people to enjoy the State Fair, while also increasing the Fair's overall potential for revenue from ticket sales and concessions.

“E-ART” COMES TO MILLARD SHEETS CENTER FOR THE ARTS AT FAIRPLEX

The 2007 L.A. County Fair’s art exhibitions are a treasured tradition, with fine art, sculpture and photography standing side by side with carnival fun and FairView Farms. Always leading-edge, this year the Millard Sheets Center for the Arts (MSCA) will add some user-friendly technology features to enhance the main exhibition, A Tapestry of Life: The World of Millard Sheets, presented by Farmers Insurance Group, as well as the center’s Contemporary Photography Competition. Look for a video preview of the exhibition at the center’s new Web site, www.millardsheetscenter.org.
The catalogue for this year’s exhibition is available online until Sept. 7 at a special pre-Fair price of $25, including shipping and handling (regularly $27.95) and will be available for shipping after Sept. 9. The full-color catalogue includes more than 130 high quality images of artwork featured in the exhibition, A Tapestry of Life: The World of Millard Sheets. This valuable memento also features an essay by Tony Sheets, the artist’s son. An artist himself, Tony Sheets offers many little-known insights into the life and art of his famous father, Millard Sheets, who served as director of the Fine Arts exhibition at the L.A. County Fair from 1931 to 1956.
Cell phone audio tours. During the exhibition, which runs concurrently with the L.A. County Fair, Sept. 7 – 30, closed Mondays and Tuesdays, guests will be able use their personal cell phones to connect to a FREE audio program to guide them through the exhibition. This is a recorded recitation of an informal conversation about Millard Sheets’ art between his son, Tony, and Janet Blake, curator of the exhibition and a world-renowned expert on Millard Sheets, as if they were taking guests on a personal tour of the exhibition.
For more information about the Fair, visit
www.lacountyfair.com or call (909) 623-3111. For information and updates on the MSCA exhibition, visit www.millardsheetscenter.org.

2007 State Fair Entertainer Strikes Gold!

Latin sensation Jenni Rivera sells 500,000 copies of latest album

SACRAMENTO, CA (August 13, 2007) Latin recording artist and confirmed 2007 State Fair entertainer, Jenni Rivera, received RIAA/Latin Gold certification for selling over 500,000 copies of her latest album, “Mi Vida Loca”. Already the recipient of Gold and Platinum certifications with her previous album, “Parrandera, Rebelde y Atrevida”, Ms. Rivera’s latest album is on the fast track to success.

Jenni Rivera is set to perform at the California State Fair on Saturday, August 25 on the Golden1 Stage. She joins Grammy-nominated artist “Weird Al” Yankovic, Huey Lewis and the News, Chicago, Daughtry, and numerous other chart-topping acts to round out the 2007 State Fair FREE Concert Series on the Golden1 stage.

Known worldwide for juggling her singing career with her duties as a sister, a girlfriend and a mother, Rivera’s 10 year career already spans over 12 albums. With songs of family, love and independence, every album contains a personal message close to her heart. Causing excitement and euphoria among fans everywhere she goes, Jenni Rivera has performed at sold-out concerts throughout the United States, Mexico, and Central America. Not only a singer but also an entrepreneur, Jenni Rivera has created a cosmetic line, worked the real estate business, and is in the process of writing an autobiography.

While on the Billboard chart, “Mi Vida Loca” reached Top 15 on the “Top Latin Albums” chart, a milestone accomplishment for a female recording artist of banda. One of the various Mexican styles extremely popular throughout Mexico and the Southwest United States, banda has traditionally been male-dominated. Ms. Rivera’s accomplishments in the genre have already created a stir as the well-deserved recipient of the esteemed title, “La Diva de la Banda” (the Diva of Banda).

General admission to all California State Fair concerts is FREE with the price of State Fair Admission. Gold Circle reserved seats near the stage are now on sale through www.tickets.com.

Fairs deserve fairer share

last updated: July 29, 2007 05:51:44 AM

There's a great fair going on in Turlock. The weather is good; 26,000 exhibitors and competitors are signed up; tons of wonderfully coiffed animals are being judged; hundreds of blue ribbons are at stake; well-known singers are appearing nightly; and just about all of the 220,000 anticipated visitors will sample some of that once-a-year food that tastes so good but is so terrible for their diets.

Someone you know will get dirty, someone will get tuckered out, someone will eat too much. What could be more fun, more wholesome — all for $25 to $30 (or half that if you skip the rides)?

It's all good. But it's not all good all around. Some fairs, like Stanislaus County's, are doing well. The Los Angeles County Fair drew 1.3 million visitors last year and San Diego got 1.2 million this year. But attendance at the San Joaquin County Fair in June was down 9 percent from 2006 and 23 percent from two years ago; they're talking about shortening the fair next year. The Santa Clara County Fair had its worst attendance ever in 2006. Others barely break even.

The days of packed horse racing grandstands are over, and some are trying to make changes

Published 12:00 am PDT Tuesday, July 17, 2007
Story appeared in SPORTS section, Page C6

Joe Barkett remembers many summers when fans throughout the Central Valley thirsted for thoroughbred racing. At county fairs and Cal Expo, the grandstands always were packed.

"Things have changed," Barkett said as he surveyed the scene on a recent afternoon at Vallejo's Solano County Fair. A few hundred people dotted the 5,000-seat grandstand as the horses pranced in the post parade.

"We'll get 2,000 here on the weekend," said Barkett, the fair's general manager. "But it's nothing like it used to be. Simulcasting and Internet (wagering) really cut (into attendance). We're all in transition. But we still expose people to racing who might never have been to a racetrack before, and that's what makes new fans."

Where does the fair go from here?

STOCKTON - The rides have been dismantled and removed. The ribbons celebrating the finest hogs, fowl and cows have been awarded. Corn dogs are once again exclusive to mini-marts and Wienerschnitzel.

Another summer stint for the San Joaquin Fair - the 147th, to be precise - came to a close last weekend, drawing more than 145,500 revelers and nearly $24 million in racetrack bets. But the annual festival of thrill rides, food and farm exhibits has lost roughly one-quarter of its audience in the past two years, leading some to question its relevance in modern San Joaquin County.

Marin County Fair's 'Aquatic Adventures' debuts Saturday

e 62nd annual Marin County Fair Saturday through July 4 will enable fairgoers to explore ocean ecosystems, marine life and habitats of the bay.

The "Aquatic Adventures" theme will be evident throughout the five-day affair through special exhibits and activities, with sea lions expected to take center stage, performing four times daily.

"We try to select a theme that reflects what people in Marin care about," said fair chief Jim Farley. "Certainly people of Marin care about the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, not to forget about Drakes, Richardson and Tomales bays that surround us."

Traditional fair favorites remain with carnival rides, concerts, farm animals and nightly fireworks on the itinerary.

But go outside the fairgrounds if you want to smoke a cigarette.

This year’s Napa County Fair, which runs from Saturday, June 30 through Wednesday, July 4, will attract many different kinds of people for different reasons, whether it’s for the Soroptimist International Champagne Art Preview the night before the fair opens, the Mexican rodeo or to see the Wonderbread Five. “We’ve been doing the fair preview for a really long time,” said SI member Suzan Shaw early this week. “I think that when we started doing it, the event was just a social evening that allowed the public a chance to get a sneak preview of the art at the county fair before the fair opened.”

Countyfairgrounds, USA - the Magazine

Countyfairgrounds, USA released the first printed public magazine the week of December 1st, 2006. 40 pages, high color gloss. It was distributed at the IAFE Convention in Las Vegas to various fair managers.
America loves its county fairs. There were several historic articles in the first issue. The Colorado State Fair had the lead. We were looking for the oldest continuous running county fair in the country. We created quite a ruckus at the convention.
As far as the oldest continuous county fair in existance? It depends how you ask the question? The question was phrased this way: We were looking for the oldest continuous running county fair in each state and/or the one with the earliest start date?
This came in from the Fredericksburg fair in Virginia - The Fredericksburg fair was established in 1738 and seems to have been the most active and successful in the colony. In 1769 the Virginia House of Burgesses designated that the fair be held "on the Monday next after the third Thursday in May and September annually." Hening, Statutes, V, 82-831 ibid., VIII, 418-419.
They bill themselves as the oldest fair in the United States having just recently concluding our 268th year.

The result: Well, we covered, California - where the state fair is the oldest without a doubt, Michigan, who has the oldest state fair, Maine, whose state fair wasn't official till 1818, South Dakota, Turner County Fair - Oregon, history of the Yamhill County Fair - Indiana, La Porrte County Fair - Michigan Lenawee County Fair 167 Years and still going - Ohio, Great Geauga county Fair - New York, Jefferson County Fair and Pennsylvania, York County Fair.

ALL this makes for great reading. If you love county fairs and wonder how they keep going - well, take a look at our magazine!
