Green Village, Alameda County Fair

I would like to applaud the Alameda County Fair for the following that was sent to me today. It shows innovation and progress and concern on their part to our environment and the fairgrounds future as a whole. One of the problems with some of our county fairs these days is their lack of ability to change and grow with the times. That is certainly not true of this fair. I for one say congratulations, and RAH to them - lets see some more of this from some of our other fairs.

Highlighting this year’s Fair will be a Living Green Program featuring a Living Green Village for the opening weekend (June 20-22). The general program will focus on our planet and how we can reduce waste, pollution and restore elements to enrich our lives as well as the environment. The program will include informational displays, exhibits and live programming. The Living Green Village will encompass a large area of the Fairgrounds and will consist of "Green" vendors, educational exhibits focusing on composting, recycling and green energy projects worldwide, and children's activities among others.

The Alameda County Fair is dedicated to the philosophy of recycling materials for the mutual goal of conservation and cost reduction while continuing to maintain the beauty of our landscaped grounds. Included in our year round Conservation and Recycling Program are:

  • Reforestation
  • Composting
  • Cardboard recycling
  • Paper recycling
  • Water recycling
  • Scrap metal recycling
  • Glass and plastic bottle recycling
  • Straw and manure recycling
  • Asphalt recycling
  • Solar Energy

Additionally, the Fair Association is extremely proud to be the largest non-profit generator of solar energy in the United States generating roughly one megawatt of electricity – enough to power nearly 1,000 homes.

The Jack Greene Show

Featuring: Grand Ole Opry Star & Country Music Legend, Jack Greene

Jack had nine #1 hits while recording for Decca Records and MCA Records. These included "There Goes My Everything," "What Locks The Door," "You Are My Treasure," "Until My Dreams Come True," "Back In The Arms Of Love," "Love Takes Care of Me," "Lord, Is That Me?" and "Statue Of A Fool." Jack has had two #1 albums; one stayed at the top of the charts for a year. Today he continues making music for his many fans.
Having toured as a drummer in the Texas Troubadour band for the legendary Ernest Tubb, Jack could scarcely have imagined the incredible success he was to achieve as a solo performer. However, E.T. could see the dynamic potential in his protégé, and actively encouraged him to strike out on his own. The rest is the stuff of history. The pinnacle of his success came during the 1967 CMA awards, where he swept every major prize including Single of the Year, Album of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year, and Song of the Year for "There Goes My Everything." The enduring popularity of that song is reflected in the fact that it has been recorded no less than 111 times, in 14 languages. Due to Jack's immense popularity, he was later inducted as a member of the Grand Ole Opry and to this day, remains a regular on the weekly Saturday night programs that have become a tradition for country music lovers everywhere.
Jack's accomplishments have been legion, and his notoriety has spread across the globe. A multiple Grammy award nominee, he was also recognized by Billboard Magazine as one of the Top 100 "Most Played Artists" over the last 40 years.

Thrills, Spills and Pranks Highlight County Fairs

County fair season is still in high gear, but it will soon wind down as eyes turn toward the Indiana State Fair. The Indiana State Fair opens in Indianapolis on Aug. 8 and continues through Aug. 19. The Indiana State Fair plans to expand to a 17-day run, but not until 2009.

Meanwhile, reports filtering in from county fairs indicate another big year of fun and fellowship. For some, it's the only time they see old friends during the year. For the kids, there's livestock showing and making pies, but there's also the Midway.

One of the most eventful fairs this year so far must have been the Greene County fair. Kerry 'Goose' Graves reports regularly, and recently shared two events from the fair.
Classify the first one under 'good old boys having a good time down on the farm- or at the fair,' as the case may be.
