Lt. John Dunbar is dubbed a principal character after he accidentally leads Union armed force to a victory during the Civil War. He requests a doctrine on the western frontier, but finds it relinquished. He soon finds out he is not alone, otherwise than that meets a wolf he dubs "Two-socks" and a scrutinizing Indian tribe.
